1Pe 1:1-2 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
GOD’S ELECT CHOSEN ACCORDING TO THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD
This is not a comprehensive look at what would be called the ‘doctrine of election’. It just indicates what some of the common views on this subject are.
Firstly one of the most commonly held view
Romans 9:10-16 (NIV) Not only that, but Rebekah’s children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. [11] Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: [12] not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” [13] Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” [14] What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! [15] For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” [16] It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
Human Beings are incapable of choosing God because sin has incapacitated their ability to choose God.
- Faith is not possible unless God gives the individual the ability to believe.
- If God does not choose to reveal Himself to a person and enable them to have faith then no one would be saved.
- Peter’s revelation of who Jesus is. Matthew 16:17 (NIV)Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
- If God chooses to reveal Himself to a person then they will believe because God is choosing them.
- God reveals Himself to those He chooses to believe.
- Human Beings are out of the equation in terms of choice because God is God and any salvation is at His discretion and not the individuals.
- The people He chooses, He enables and motivates so that they fulfill exactly what He has planned for Himself through them.
- Once a person is saved the person will always remain saved because his salvation is not dependant on himself but God.
The second view is based on the foreknowledge of God
Romans 8:29-30 (NIV) For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. [30] And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
- God chooses people based on His foreknowledge of those that will choose Him.
- Before time, God knew those who would choose Him and therefore He chooses the people He knows will choose Him.
A third view primarily works with varying degrees of responsibility on the part of people to choose God.
- God has made all the provision that is necessary for every person to be saved in the cross (This statement is scriptural )
- Every person is capable of salvation if they activate that provision of salvation through faith.
- The extreme view however indicates that God does not do any more in the work of salvation because it has already been done
- It is up to the individual to ‘work out their salvation’ with fear and trembling’ and there is no certainty of salvation until you die.
- He who endures to the end will be saved’.
A fourth view is election is communal more than it is individual.
Just as God chose and old covenant people Israel, God has chosen a new covenant people, His Church
Ephesians 1:11 In him we(corporate) were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.
- Choosing on God’s part is corporate not individual and ‘I’ was included in the choosing when I believed and was added to His community of elect.
- In this view all the scriptures to do with election emphasize that when the scripture indicates ‘we’ it is not dealing with one but a many.
- It is interesting that in the west we interpret things based on how it relates to the individual, but the Jewish mind would always interpret things from a communal mind.
- Take for instance the Lord’s prayer. When we pray individually “Our Father” in our mind we are thinking “My Father”.
- When we think of ‘we’ were chosen, we are actually thinking when ‘I’ was chosen. But the scripture is actually meaning ‘we not I’
What is the purpose of mentioning these views?
Awareness so that we are not caught off guard
- Some of us are very aware of these positions and have made our mind up on the matter.
- Some of us this may be the first time we have heard that there are these views.
- These differing views have the potential to divide some and cause others to stumble and so we need to be prepared, so that we don’t divide and we don’t stumble.
- What is important is the fact that these views are still debated strongly by good intelligent believers.
- This means that the matter is in no way settled and there is freedom to have a position that differs from others
TO BE THE ELECT
Privileged position
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Strangers in this world
- The desires, wants and ambitions of people in this world should be strange to us.
- 1 Jn 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Submitted to the sanctifying work of the Spirit
Rom 8:12-17 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
- We need revival, but it must be a “Holy Revival”! The Holy Spirit brings a Holy revival
- John 16:7-8 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
- A revival without the conviction of sin by the power of the Holy Spirit will not last
- I believe we need to see the power of the Holy Spirit manifest in all kinds of signs and wonders.
- It would be a tragedy however if there was no conviction of sin that accompanies those signs and wonders.
Our Objective is to obey Christ
- Obedience in walk as well as word
- We have to hear the voice of the Spirit and do that
